There are four seasons which are characterized by different temperatures and may also vary from every location. Each order of season: spring, summer, fall or autumn, and winter affects our pets specifically our dogs, too. Since winter is coming, we need to prepare ourselves and our furry friends for the extreme cold. The tips that I am going to mention below will help you on how to care for your dog during winter.

Indoor pets

When winter comes, one of the ways to care for your dogs during this cold season is that you keep them indoors. As we know, dogs are at their happiest when we take them for walks in the park, since they mostly stay at home. However, during the cold season, it is best to protect your dog from being exposed to the extreme cold weather since your dog might catch a cold when exposed outside. Never leave your dog out when the temperature drops, because they might acquire dangerous weather conditions like frostbite and hypothermia.

Healthy Food and Water

One of the tips on how to care for your dog in the winter is that you should give your dog a healthy food and clean water. The dog needs healthy foods during winter, which includes a raw meat-based diet that helps ensure healthy fur and abundant energy - during this season, avoid giving your dog frozen food. Make it also a point to keep your dog hydrated; and, when providing water, use plastic water bowls and regularly check the container for any ice formations in it. Every two to three hours, replenish the old water with fresh one because it is not healthy for your dogs to be drinking cold water during the winter season.

Warm and Cozy Bed

Do not let your dog sleep on a cold floor. One of the tips on how to take care of your dog during the winter season is that you should create a warm and cozy bed for him/her to sleep; because the dog’s prolonged contact with the cold ground can make him/her sick. Ensure that the bed is in a warm spot that has a carpet and where he/she sleeps every day so that he will not feel any unfamiliarity in the place since you will be adding thicker blankets and more pillows to keep him/her warm. You can also raise the mattress of your dog to keep it off the cold tiles or concrete.

Paw Care

Like humans, our dogs also develop foot cracks during winter. To avoid your dog from suffering foot cracks, you can put cute booties on his/her feet when walking outside. Some dogs get a discomfort when walking on the salted surface or frozen ground. Always check the legs of your dog especially with its fur; you may trim some hair that grows between his/her toes to avoid the snow from getting stuck. After walking outside, make sure that you clean the paws of your dog to get rid of any unhygienic foreign particles that the dog is most likely to ingest.

Frostbite

During winter, dogs are prone to health problems like frostbite. Frostbite is causing the body tissue freeze. Extreme cold causes the blood vessel contract, reducing the blood flow and oxygen to the affected parts. One sign that shows your dog acquired a frostbite is when his/her skin appears whitish-gray to red and can be easily peeled off. To avoid frostbite, clean your dog thoroughly from traces of snow as soon as possible, or whenever you reach home or any dry place and put your dog near the fireplace to keep him/her warm.

Avoid Shaving

Thick coats serve as a natural insulator or natural warmer for dogs during the winter season. That’s why it is not advisable to shave or cut them off during cold months. And don’t take your dog for a walk after giving him/her a bath. Let his/her coat and skin dry off completely. Walking your dog outside with a wet fur has a chance for him/her to catch a cold.

Wrap your Dog in Woolens

One of the things you can do to care for your dog during the winter is to wrap him/her in the jacket. There are umpteen sweaters and jackets available in the market nowadays that is cozy and also can keep your dog warm. Just pick the right size when buying one.

Dog Check Up during winter

Visit your veterinarian for dog check-ups. During the winter, dogs are prone to health conditions like arthritis, hyperthermia, and frostbites, among others. You can also ask for health supplements and other medication if you notice that your pet experiences some health conditions. It is also important to be aware of the exercise routine of your dog – exercising every day can also help keep your dog’s temperature warm enough to keep his/her healthy throughout this chilling season.
