Do this step several times until your dog gets used to it.

If you see that your dog is not quite getting the training, feel free to return to the foundational targeting which is stated in Step 1. Your dog must practice this behavior for a bit longer.

  • Step 3 – to aid teaching your dog to close the door, you must try to introduce the cue you are going to use to ask your dog to close the door. Some good choices include the words push, pull and door. It is up to you what you want to use. What you are going to do is to stand next to the door, and wait for your dog to touch the Post-It note. As your dog touches the target, happily state the cue which you have selected. Then, give your dog a treat. This process should be repeated ten times in a row, two or three times in a day, for five to seven days. The key here is the constant practice.

To aid teaching your dog to close the door, you must try to introduce the cue you are going to use to ask your dog to close the door

  • Step 4 – This time, try to open the door two to three inches. Bring your dog near the door and give him your cue. When your dog already masters the first three steps, he should be able to touch the Post-It note immediately with his nose. If the door moves even just a little bit, praise him and give him a treat. Open the door again and practice until your dog already knows how to close it with enough force. During this step, try to be positive and enthusiastic. Never lose patience at all.

  • Step 5 – Begin the widening of the opening of the door gradually. Just take it slow and practice having your dog obey the command. If your dog stops closing the door, spend a couple of days working on it before you try to increase the difficulty again. Remember to have fun with your canine partner.

  • Step 6 – Try to step back from the door so you will be standing a few inches away from it. Command your dog to nose the target and close the door for you. When he does the trick successfully, you should reward him with many treats. Then, try again. If your dog already masters this skill, increase your distance away from the door gradually. If your dog stops performing this behavior, work a little closer again so that your dog can succeed. Only increase the distance when your dog is already comfortable with the behavior.

  • Step 7 – Begin practicing your dog to obey the command while you are doing other stuff. You can give him the cue while you are watching television, or eating in the dining room, or hanging out with the family. Always reward your dog when he does the trick successfully.
